In a groundbreaking move for current and future VW electric vehicle owners, Volkswagen announced plans earlier this month to integrate the North American Charging Standard (NACS) into its new electric vehicles, starting in 2025. This bold step not only marks a milestone in Volkswagen's EV strategy but also signals a significant enhancement in the charging experience for EV users across North America.

Volkswagen electric vehicles to adopt NACS charging starting in 2025

The transition to NACS by Volkswagen is a clear indication of the company's dedication to fostering open standards in the EV industry. Starting from 2025, all new Volkswagen electric vehicles will be equipped with NACS charging ports. This strategic alignment with NACS is expected to dramatically increase the accessibility of charging options for Volkswagen EV owners, connecting them to an extensive network that includes over 15,000 Tesla Superchargers.

Current VW electric vehicles to also receive NACS compatibility

Addressing the needs of current Volkswagen EV owners, who predominantly use vehicles with Combined Charging System (CCS) ports, the company is investigating the development of adapter solutions. These adapters will enable existing Volkswagen EVs to utilize the Tesla Supercharger network, effectively widening the charging network and enhancing the utility of their vehicles.

Complementing this initiative, Electrify America, a prominent player in the field of DC fast charging, has announced its plan to incorporate the NACS connector in its North American charging stations by 2025. This addition will run alongside the continued support for CCS connectors, thereby offering a diverse range of charging options for EV drivers.

Pablo Di Si, President and CEO of Volkswagen Group of America, expressed optimism about this development. He emphasized the increased charging network access that Volkswagen customers will gain, including the already nearly 4,000 DC fast charging outlets operated by Electrify America. This expansion is particularly significant for popular models like the Volkswagen ID.4, ensuring access to a comprehensive and expanding charging network.

Tesla's Senior Director of Charging, Rebecca Tinucci, also commented on the evolution of NACS, noting its rapid acceptance among major automotive manufacturers. Tinucci highlighted the industry's collaborative effort to improve the EV charging experience, signifying a united push towards sustainable energy solutions.

As 2025 nears, Volkswagen is set to unveil detailed plans on how the Tesla North American Charging Standard will be integrated into specific vehicle models. This strategic move by Volkswagen is not just a leap forward for the company but a transformative step for the entire EV industry, paving the way for a more connected, convenient, and sustainable future in electric vehicle transportation.
